UNDP‑funded Indian initiative brings value‑addition to Kiribati’s coconut sector

A joint venture between India and Kiribati, funded by the UNDP‑India partnership fund, has commenced construction of a virgin coconut oil (VCO) plant in Tarawa. The US$9 million financial support is earmarked to establish processing units on the Nonoatai and Teraina islands.

The project aims to convert raw coconuts into a premium oil, opening new market avenues and increasing export potential. Local staff will undergo hands‑on training, ensuring that technical expertise remains within the community.

Kiribati’s President Taneti Maamau, along with senior government officials and industry representatives, attended the inauguration, underscoring the shared commitment to sustainable economic growth.

According to the Kiribati Minister of Tourism, Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, the venture aligns with national policy documents, including the 20‑year Vision and the 2024‑2027 development plan, and supports the island’s shift from raw coconut reliance to diversified, value‑added products.
