Urban Waste Resource Utilization to Surpass 76% by 2030

China’s urban waste management is entering a new phase. Government data reveals that the country aims to push the national urban household waste resource utilization rate above 76 percent by the end of 2030. This target was highlighted during a high-level meeting organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in Beijing. The meeting coincided with the launch of the fourth National Urban Household Waste Sorting Promotion Week, scheduled from May 25 to 31. Officials outlined plans to refine waste classification systems, reduce overall waste volumes, and ensure environmentally sound disposal methods. Progress so far shows that 297 major cities have implemented waste sorting in nearly all residential areas. These cities have enacted 199 local rules and created over 100 technical standards to guide implementation. The systematic rollout demonstrates how legal and technical measures are being combined to institutionalize sustainable waste practices. Looking ahead, authorities will continue to strengthen policy frameworks and promote public participation. These efforts are expected to support broader goals of building cleaner, more livable cities across China.
