The United States is reportedly reviewing a proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning nuclear arms control. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated that the U.S. conveyed its consideration through diplomatic channels. However, Lavrov stated that Moscow has yet to receive a ‘substantive response’ from Washington regarding the initiative, which aims to extend the limitations of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) beyond its February expiration. Russia has emphasized that it will not actively lobby for the U.S. to accept President Putin’s proposal, viewing it as a clear and beneficial initiative for all parties involved and the global community. Moscow is prepared for various outcomes, hoping for a positive resolution. This discussion comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement about potentially resuming nuclear weapons testing, a move that prompted a similar assertion from President Putin regarding adherence to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) moratorium.
