The United States has immediately suspended the issuance of all visas for commercial truck drivers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced this decision on Thursday amid growing concerns following a deadly highway accident. The move comes in response to criticism from within the Republican base following the fatal crash. Rubio stated the increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and harming the livelihoods of American truckers. The announcement followed the news that a truck driver, Harjinder Singh, an Indian national, was charged with killing three people in a Florida highway crash while allegedly making an illegal U-turn. Singh reportedly entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico and failed an English exam after the crash. The incident has garnered significant media attention and political involvement, particularly in Florida. The Trump administration has placed responsibility on California Governor Gavin Newsom, as the state issued Singh a commercial license. Newsom’s office clarified Singh possessed a work permit issued by the federal Trump administration and that California cooperated in his deportation.
