In a significant escalation of anti-drug operations, the United States military has conducted multiple strikes against four suspected drug-smuggling boats in the eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals and leaving one survivor. These actions are a key component of President Donald Trump’s intensified campaign aimed at dismantling illicit narcotics networks operating in international waters.
The operation, detailed by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth via social media, targeted vessels identified by intelligence as actively engaged in narco-trafficking. According to Hegseth’s statements, the boats were carrying narcotics and had a total of 15 individuals aboard across the strikes. The initial strike reportedly involved eight male “narco-terrorists,” followed by a second with four, and a third with three. All 14 were killed, with one survivor remaining.
Crucially, these strikes occurred in international waters, ensuring no U.S. forces were harmed. Following standard protocols, U.S. Southern Command initiated search and rescue procedures for the lone survivor. Mexican authorities have since taken over the coordination of this rescue operation, demonstrating international cooperation in maritime security.
This latest incident marks a notable increase in the U.S. military’s efforts against drug trafficking. Since early September, 13 operations have led to the destruction of 14 vessels and the reported deaths of 57 individuals, with three survivors to date. The campaign’s reach has recently expanded to the eastern Pacific, following earlier operations in the Caribbean Sea.
Reports indicate the Trump administration has developed a legal framework, including a classified opinion, that permits the use of lethal force against drug traffickers by designating them as enemy combatants, thereby enabling such operations without the need for judicial review. Mexico’s government has been briefed on the operation, emphasizing the international waters aspect and initiating coordination for further details.
