Central Vietnam is grappling with devastating floods and landslides following days of torrential rainfall. Authorities have confirmed at least 41 fatalities across six provinces, with ongoing search operations for nine individuals still missing. The relentless downpour has inundated over 52,000 homes, compelling approximately 62,000 residents to evacuate their residences. Critical roadways have become impassable due to landslides, and around one million households are currently without electricity. Rescue efforts are intensely focused on reaching individuals stranded on the rooftops of their submerged houses. Rainfall in some areas has exceeded an astonishing 150 cm in just three days, severely impacting major coffee-growing regions and popular tourist beach destinations. The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued warnings of potential sea level rises of 0.3 to 0.6 meters along coastal areas from Hue city to Dak Lak province. The approaching Typhoon Kalmaegi is projected to make landfall over central Vietnam, bringing further heavy rains and potential flash floods, landslides, and inundation in low-lying and urban areas.
