Wuxi, often called the “Pearl of Taihu Lake,” transformed into a center of spiritual diplomacy this week as it welcomed the 21st United Nations Vesak Day. The three-day program, running from May 26, drew roughly one thousand delegates representing Buddhist communities across sixty-seven nations. In his written address, Wang Huning highlighted how Vesak Day unites followers in remembrance of the Buddha’s life and teachings while advancing the broader goals of world peace and shared prosperity. He praised the International Council for the Day of Vesak for consistently translating the principles of compassion and non-violence into practical cooperation among nations. China’s support for such exchanges, Wang added, reflects its long-standing policy of encouraging religious groups to engage internationally on the basis of equality and mutual respect. Co-hosted by the Buddhist Association of China and its Jiangsu chapter, the event features panel discussions on Buddhist ethics in modern governance, environmental protection, and youth education. Cultural evenings showcase traditional music, dance, and art from participating countries, fostering people-to-people connections that official diplomacy alone cannot achieve. Analysts note that holding the gathering in Wuxi sends a deliberate signal: China intends to position itself as a responsible stakeholder in global Buddhist affairs. The city’s combination of economic dynamism and rich religious heritage makes it an ideal venue for conversations that link ancient wisdom with twenty-first-century challenges. By the time the final declaration is adopted, organizers hope participants will leave with renewed determination to apply Buddhist insights to issues ranging from mental health crises to international conflict resolution.
